Roches Point, standing at the entrance to Cork Harbour. It was first built in 1817 and deemed “not tall enough” so it was later rebuilt in 1835 to a larger height of 49 feet.
This is the 3rd drawing in my series of lighthouse illustrations, and this one is quite special to me as I I spent a lot of my childhood holidays around Crosshaven with Roches Point always there in the distance. I remember building sandcastles and catching crabs in the rugged Graball Bay, while my mam would deal out the warm ham sandwiches wrapped in tin foil, diluted orange and marietta biscuits. It was a treat getting a few Ice lols from the little shop and the end of the hill.
I used to hear stories about people who swam from Graball Bay to Roches Point Lighthouse lighthouse which looked impossibly far from where I stood. The Lighthouse always fascinated me, and also instilled fear on those foggy nights where you’d hear the fog horn eerily blasting around the harbour. So there’s a lot of memories wrapped up in this one.
